Why I'm Running
As a mother, I am constantly thinking about the world that my daughter will grow up in, as well as the state of the Earth we will leave to future generations. I know it is extremely important to address climate change, protect our water, and lift our people up.
In West Virginia, we are battling poverty with an underdeveloped economy, along with massive social and environmental injustice. Political corruption and corporate control have stifled our communities. The pharmaceutical companies intentionally poured opioids into our towns, and got our people addicted to the point of crisis, simply for more profit. Our mountains have been detonated. Our drinking water has been poisoned again and again. Now they want to build the toxic Appalachian Storage Hub, on the Ohio River, which would be a huge petrochemical processing complex with 7 plants and thousands of miles of pipelines running though our backyards. We can work together to stop it!
We can create a just and sustainable economy that values the people as well as the Earth while fighting climate change by investing in clean energy, in our communities, in our small farmers, and in our students and education. We can transform government to put the power back into the hands of the people, on every level. We can ensure that people have the right to live with dignity, with access to clean water, healthy food, affordable housing, quality education, quality healthcare and the ability to have a say in the political process.
I've worked in education, and I've seen the flaws of our system. I know what it's like to be underpaid as a teacher and I can relate to working families who are struggling to make ends meet. I've also worked in healthcare and I've seen how badly people need comprehensive and preventative care. I've been a community organizer for over ten years, and I've gotten tired of begging political leaders to make the right decisions for the people, only to have our voices fall on ears that aren't listening. It's time for regular people to start taking those seats of power.
I am running for office as a part of a larger grassroots movement called West Virginia Can't Wait, that is saying no to corporate cash. I'm proud to have signed the West Virginia Can't Wait pledge. We are organizing and uniting the people, so that together we can achieve what seems impossible. We can break the legacy of corruption, and create a legacy of empowerment.
The time is now to rise up!
A Thriving Future for Everyone
Supporting Small Farmers
Food security is going to be one of the biggest issues in the future, with changing weather patterns making it harder to plant traditional crops. Small farmers are well positioned to provide food resiliency to local communities, and help fight climate change with sustainable agricultural practices. I will work to invest in family farmers, and assist them to transition to become more sustainable and resilient. I also support programs that educate young people and provide funding for land, to support young people who want to get started in farming.
Cannabis and Hemp Legalization
These plants have been made illegal long enough. I am a supporter of personal liberty and the ability of an adult to make a decision for themselves. Cannabis has proven itself to have many medicinal qualities and is far less dangerous than alcohol. Hemp and cannabis can help revitalize our economy, and increase tax revenue needed to tackle some of our biggest problems, especially here in West Virginia. Hemp can be made into a great sustainable source for fuel, bioplastics, fabric, paper, and much more.
I support federal legalization of Hemp and Cannabis.
Supporting Rehabilitation Alternative Treatments for Opioid Addiction
West Virginia has faced the Opioid Epidemic for years. It has ravaged our communities, and little support has come at a federal level. We must hold the pharmaceutical companies financially accountable for their role in this crisis, and have them pay for more adequate addiction treatment facilities and research, while decriminalizing addiction. It is also time to get creative and begin allowing proven alternative and plant-based therapies for reducing opioid addiction.
Education and a
Minimum Teacher Salary
We need to pay teachers more as well as give them more freedom and autonomy in the classroom. I support a $60,000 minimum teacher salary. We also need tuition-free higher education so that young people can get ahead without drowning in debt. I support a complete revamp of our education system to focus on the individual and give kids more outside time!
In the richest country on earth, there is no reason that anyone should die from the lack of ability to pay for a drug or medical bill. It's time that we join the rest of the developed world and prioritize healthcare as a right. I support a single payer, medicare-for-all system that will cut out the insurance companies as the middle man, which will save billions in overhead costs, so that we can focus on providing quality and preventative care to everyone.
Climate Change, Clean Water, and Food Security
It is imperative that we leave a livable planet behind to future generations. Young people are facing climate catastrophe in our lifetimes. I will fight to pass strong climate actions such as the Green New Deal, and strong protection for our water sources. I will oppose fracking, pipelines, and the toxic Appalachian Storage Hub. Investment in the clean energy sector as well as hemp and regenerative farming can restore West Virginia's economy while fighting climate change.
