Why I'm Running
My name is Hilary Turner, and I'm running for US Congress
to represent West Virginia's 3rd district. As a former teacher,
healthcare worker, and community organizer I have seen
the amazing things West Virginia and her people have to
offer. My family has had a farm in Greenbrier County for six generations, I am happy to be raising my daughter in this beautiful state. I will work to build a sustainable and thriving future for West Virginia for our children to raise their families here and for the generations to come.
I was living on the family farm in 2016 when our state was
devastated by a “thousand-year flood”. Our communities
came together to help their neighbors who had lost their
homes. In moments of crisis and loss, West Virginians put
aside all differences and work together to help uplift our
communities. I hold this most sacred of West Virginia values
dear to my heart and I will take those values to Washington
and be a voice for those who feel forgotten by our elected
Our people are struggling due to economic, social, and
environmental injustice. Political corruption and corporate
control have stifled our communities and stopped them from
flourishing. This country was built on the blood, sweat, and
tears of our people and it is time for West Virginia to share
in the wealth we helped to create.
We can create an equitable and thriving economy that values
our people as well as the natural beauty of our state. We
can bring clean energy into our economy, provide our
children with a high-quality education, and pass the Reclaim
Act to reinvest in our local communities.
We can build a government that puts our interests first
by putting the power back into the hands of We the People.
We can ensure that people have the right to live with dignity, with access to quality healthcare, clean water to drink, healthy food, and safe and affordable housing. All of these things are possible if we stick to our West Virginia values and work together to build a brighter future for all of us.
Just like you, I have grown tired of begging elected officials
to make the right decisions for our communities. It is
obvious that our needs and voices have fallen on deaf ears.
It’s time we elect everyday West Virginians who will work alongside our families and passionate community leaders.
That is why I'm running.
I am proud to have signed the WV Can’t Wait pledge that
says I will take no corporate or corporate PAC dollars, I will
never cross a picket line, and I will never back down from a
debate. Our campaign is organizing and uniting the people,
so that together we can achieve what seems impossible.
Together, we can break the cycle of corruption and create a
legacy of empowerment and growth.
Now is the time to rise up!
A Thriving Future for West Virginia
Supporting Small Farmers
Food security is going to be one of the biggest issues in the future, with changing weather patterns making it harder to plant traditional crops. Small farmers are well positioned to provide food resiliency to local communities, and help fight climate change with sustainable agricultural practices. I will work to invest in family farmers, and assist them to transition to become more sustainable and resilient. I also support programs that educate young people and provide funding for land, to support young people who want to get started in farming.
Cannabis and Hemp Legalization
These plants have been made illegal long enough. I am a supporter of personal liberty and the ability of an adult to make a decision for themselves. Cannabis has proven itself to have many medicinal qualities and is far less dangerous than alcohol. Hemp and cannabis can help revitalize our economy, and increase tax revenue needed to tackle some of our biggest problems, especially here in West Virginia. Hemp can be made into a great sustainable source for fuel, bioplastics, fabric, paper, and much more.
I support federal legalization of Hemp and Cannabis.
Supporting Rehabilitation Alternative Treatments for Opioid Addiction
West Virginia has faced the Opioid Epidemic for years. It has ravaged our communities, and little support has come at a federal level. We must hold the pharmaceutical companies financially accountable for their role in this crisis, and have them pay for more adequate addiction treatment facilities and research, while decriminalizing addiction. It is also time to get creative and begin allowing proven alternative and plant-based therapies for reducing opioid addiction.
Education and a
Minimum Teacher Salary
We need to pay teachers more as well as give them more freedom and autonomy in the classroom. I support a $60,000 minimum teacher salary. We also need tuition-free higher education so that young people can get ahead without drowning in debt. I support a complete revamp of our education system to focus on the individual and give kids more outside time!
In the richest country on earth, there is no reason that anyone should die from the lack of ability to pay for a drug or medical bill. It's time that we join the rest of the developed world and prioritize healthcare as a right. I support a single payer, medicare-for-all system that will cut out the insurance companies as the middle man, which will save billions in overhead costs, so that we can focus on providing quality and preventative care to everyone.
Climate Change, Clean Water, and Food Security
It is imperative that we leave a livable planet behind to future generations. Young people are facing climate catastrophe in our lifetimes. I will fight to pass strong climate actions such as the Green New Deal, and strong protection for our water sources. I will oppose fracking, pipelines, and the toxic Appalachian Storage Hub. Investment in the clean energy sector through minefield restoration, as well as hemp and regenerative farming can restore West Virginia's economy while fighting climate change.
